Midnight sun in Tromsø: summer on the fjord when the sun never sets

In summer something magical happens in Tromsø: the sun never sets. For weeks it hangs above the horizon around the clock, bathing the mountains and fjord in a golden light that never turns to night. And few places let you experience the midnight sun more beautifully than from the deck of a wooden boat, out on the mirror-calm fjord.

When is the midnight sun in Tromsø?

The midnight sun in Tromsø lasts roughly from 20 May to 22 July. During this period it’s light around the clock, and the late evening hours – when the light turns warm and golden – are often the most beautiful of the whole trip.

A summer evening on the fjord

Hermes II is a calm, historic wooden boat, and summer suits her. You stand on deck in shirtsleeves, the sea lies still, and the mountains mirror in the water while the skipper tells the story of the more than century-old boat. It’s summer in Northern Norway at its most atmospheric.

Wildlife and long, light nights

Summer is also peak season for life along the coast. Along the way you may spot a sea eagle, a seal or a porpoise, and the long daylight gives you plenty of time to take it all in. If you want the landscape and the history, see our guide to fjord cruises in Tromsø.

Dress for summer at sea

Even in sunshine it’s a little cooler at sea than on land, so bring an extra layer. The saloon on board is heated if you want to step inside, but on a fine summer evening the deck is the best place to be.
