The experience
Experience the breath-taking scenery and the atmosphere on board this more than 100-year old, unique wooden boat. Enjoy the calmness out on the clear Arctic waters, while we guide you through Hermes II’s history.
It is difficult to describe a feeling to someone who has never felt it. How do you describe a unique experience that only you have had? So, how do we explain the feeling of being on board a wooden boat that is over 100 years old to someone who has never experienced it? We can try with words, pictures and video, but you can only appreciate the full experience when you get on board.
Peace & quiet
Tranquillity.
Calmness away from the bustling town. Cars, shops and people in a hurry. The peaceful sound of the waves hitting the bow, while the beat of the engine thumps faithfully in the engine room. On deck it is open. Totally open. It doesn’t matter whether you turn to port or starboard, the view is the same. It takes your breath away.
Snow-covered, majestic mountains tower over clean, Arctic waters. The occasional seagull follows the boat. As a reflex, they think that there is food to be found here. Is it the sound of the Cummins 335 engine that is recognisable? Or is it the vessel’s history as a fishing boat that attracts the gulls to look for a free meal?
On the trip, we will tell you about Hermes II’s intriguing history. We also serve hot drinks and there is an opportunity to taste some snacks from selected local producers.
Safety first
Hermes II is equipped with top-quality modern navigation and safety equipment. On board, you will meet highly qualified and experienced skippers and hosts with upgraded safety training. A trip with Hermes II should be a pleasant and safe experience for everyone.
Facilities
You can wander around on deck and enjoy the atmosphere or relax on the seating. Blankets and seat mats are available when you want to warm up a bit. If it’s still a little too cold for you, we have thermal insulation suits you can borrow.
Below deck you will find a nice and warm lounge with seating, dining table, bunks, bar and toilets. There are also screens that show films about the boats the company owns. From dramatic scenes from deep-sea fishing in the Barents Sea to scenic trips in glorious sunshine with Hermes II. All the screens that the skipper has on the bridge can also be viewed down here. You can follow the boat’s course, observe where other boats are located, check the depth around the vessel and try to see if there are fish nearby.
Serving
Hermes II is registered as a restaurant with a serving licence. Therefore we are not able to allow our guests to bring their own food or drinks. Exceptions can be made for small children and allergy sufferers.
On THE SHORTER TRIPS we provide a small range of selected local products. We also serve hot drinks and that are included, and if you like, you may purchase alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
Some of our SPECIAL SEASONAL CRUISES we offer special food & wine/beer menues. We focus on local produce to give you an exciting culinary experience. E.g: Skriemølje (famous fresh cod dish) in the winter, aquavit & herring dishes for Christmas, beer and seafood-based local street food in the summer or other special events related to food concepts.
We plan the TAILOR-MADE TRIPS in cooperation with you. There are many options, from a pure boat trip without food, to various servings on deck, to multi-course tasting menus in the lounge below deck. On a trip with us you can enjoy a culinary experience with a delicious selection of known – and perhaps unknown – flavours from the best local food producers.
Please contact us, and we will find the best menue for your private cruise.
Clothing
Tromsø lies approximately on the edge of the Arctic ice. It is cold here, but it is even colder out at sea and it’s more exposed to wind. We therefore recommend that you keep abreast of the weather forecast before your trip and dress accordingly.
